Free NDT Level 2 course with certificate: is it enough?
A free online NDT course can teach you the theory, but a course certificate on its own does not make you Level II: ASNT's Level II program asks for a set number of training days in each method, documented work experience and two written exams, and under SNT-TC-1A only your employer issues certification. So before you take any course, free or paid, check that its completion record is the kind of training evidence your certification route accepts, and that it shows the method and the hours.
Free courses still have a place. This page shows what a Level II actually needs, what ASNT accepts as proof of training, the questions to ask any course provider, and how to use free material without wasting the hours.
What Level II actually needs
"Level II" can mean three different routes: ASNT NDT Level II, ASNT 9712, or certification by your employer under SNT-TC-1A. Pick yours first. The ASNT vs employer certification guide shows how they differ.
For ASNT NDT Level II, ASNT publishes training and experience minimums for each method. Training:
| Method | Training | Experience in the method | Total NDT experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetic particle (MT) | 3 days | 40 days | 76 days |
| Liquid penetrant (PT) | 2 days | 30 days | 58 days |
| Ultrasonic (UT) | 12 days | 120 days | 229 days |
| Radiographic (RT) | 12 days | 120 days | 229 days |
| Visual (VT) | 4 days | 30 days | 58 days |
ASNT counts a day as at least seven hours, and the hours can be built up across several days. At that minimum, UT training is 84 hours and PT is 14. Experience has to be in NDT, under qualified supervision and in the method you're applying for. The written side is a 50-item General exam and a 40-item Specific exam, two hours each, and your employer still handles vision, practical and any job-specific exams under its written practice. The requirements guide lays out every method and how to keep the records.
A course, free or not, covers only the first column. It doesn't give you experience days and it doesn't sit the exams for you.

What ASNT accepts as proof of training
ASNT's Level II page lists the documents it accepts as training evidence:
- Copies of training certificates.
- A letter of completion.
- Employer or third-party certificates or certification records.
- A signed statement of completed training from the trainer or a training company executive.
- A signed statement of completed hours from an ASNT NDT, ACCP or 9712 Level III.
All of it must be in English or come with an English translation. The same page says ASNT offers its own education and training courses designed to help candidates reach the training required.
Two things that page does not say: it doesn't say whether online or self-paced training is accepted, and it doesn't restrict who may provide training beyond the people who sign those documents. So a free online course isn't ruled out, and it isn't ruled in. The deciding question is whether the provider will give you a record that fits one of the bullets above, with the method and the hours on it.
And one thing it says clearly: certificates of training are not accepted as evidence of experience. Neither are qualifications that weren't issued by an employer, or Level I certificates. Experience comes from employer-signed records such as inspection logbooks, inspection reports or a signed statement from your employer or responsible Level III.
If your employer certifies you under SNT-TC-1A
ASNT's advisory of 11 June 2026 is blunt about this route. SNT-TC-1A certifications should only be issued by employers, as part of their own qualification system. Training institutes may provide NDT training and may give certification exams for an employer when the requirements are met, but they cannot issue SNT-TC-1A certification on their own. The advisory also flags certificates that claim SNT-TC-1A compliance without a proper link to an employer's written practice, and says the use of ASNT's name or logo on certificates is prohibited.
So if a free course hands you a certificate that says "Level II" or "SNT-TC-1A certified", treat that wording as a warning sign, not a credential. Your employer's written practice sets the hours of training and experience you need, and only your employer can certify you under it.
Questions to ask before you start any free course
- Which program and method does the completion record support? Get the answer in writing.
- Does the record state the hours? A certificate with no hours is hard to use as training evidence.
- Who signs it? A trainer, a training company executive or a Level III, as ASNT's list describes.
- Will my employer accept it? Ask the Level III or program owner who maintains your written practice before you spend the time.
- What does it cover for my method? UT needs far more training than PT, so a short general course rarely covers a full method.
- Is there any hands-on part? Theory online is useful; probe time, magnetizing and penetrant processing are learned with the equipment.

Free versus paid: what each one gets you
Free material is real and worth using. OpenExamPrep publishes a free ASNT NDT II study guide with 225 questions, as read on 22 Oct 2026. Free videos and articles explain physics, method basics and the math. None of that replaces a course whose completion record your route accepts.
Paid training buys documented hours. The AWS and NDT Classroom Ultrasonic Testing II online course listed $1,045 for 60 days of access on 22 Oct 2026. Exam prep is a third thing: it drills the written General exam and shows where you're weak, and it doesn't provide hours of training at all. The UT Level II study options comparison puts training courses and exam prep side by side with prices and sources.
A sensible order for most people: confirm your route and the hours you need, get the training documented, collect your experience records as you work, and use free and paid practice to get ready for the written exams.

FAQ
Can I get NDT Level 2 certification from a free online course?
No. A course provides training at most. ASNT NDT Level II also needs documented experience in the method and passing the General and Specific exams, and under SNT-TC-1A your employer issues the certification.
Does ASNT accept online NDT training?
ASNT's Level II page lists the documents it accepts as training evidence, such as training certificates, a letter of completion or a signed statement from the trainer or a Level III. It doesn't say whether online training is accepted, so confirm with ASNT or your employer before you rely on one.
How many hours of training does UT Level 2 need?
ASNT lists 12 training days for UT Level II, with a day of at least seven hours, so 84 hours at the minimum. An employer's written practice sets its own figure, so check yours.
Is a training certificate proof of experience?
No. ASNT's page says certificates of training are not accepted as evidence of experience. Experience is shown with employer-signed records such as inspection logbooks or reports.
