ASNT central certification vs employer certification under SNT-TC-1A

✓ Checked 17 Oct 2026 against ASNT's certification comparison, program pages and advisory on SNT-TC-1A certification practices.

“Level II” does not identify a complete certification route. Check who issues the credential, which method it covers and what your employer requires before buying preparation. ASNT's own certification comparison distinguishes ASNT NDT certification from ASNT 9712 certification. Employer certification under SNT-TC-1A is another important distinction.

The Angle Beam overview and UT General guide explain our current preparation scope. This page helps you decide whether that scope matches the exam you intend to take.

Employer certification under SNT-TC-1A

ASNT's certification-practices advisory describes SNT-TC-1A as a recommended practice that guides an employer's own qualification and certification system. The employer's written practice is the link between the requirements, examinations and certification decision.

The advisory makes a useful distinction about outside providers: training institutes may deliver training and may provide examinations for an employer when the applicable requirements are met. They cannot independently issue SNT-TC-1A certification. A signature from an ASNT Level III on a training-provider document does not, by itself, establish that employer linkage.

Before relying on a document, ask who issued it and whether it records training completion, examination results or an employer certification decision. Keep those descriptions precise in a résumé or work-history file. If the document's meaning is unclear, have the responsible technical reviewer explain its scope before presenting it as a qualification for a new assignment.

ASNT NDT Level II central certification

Under the ASNT NDT Level II program, ASNT administers General and Specific written examinations. The employer still handles visual acuity, practical and any job-specific examinations required by its written practice. ASNT asks employers to check that the program exams meet their requirements.

That means an ASNT-issued credential and the employer's authorization process have different roles. Before selecting this route, ask the employer which ASNT method and sector examinations it will accept and which assessments remain. Record the answer with your study plan so you prepare for the correct written examination while arranging the practical work separately.

ASNT 9712 is a separate program

The ASNT 9712 Level II page describes certification meeting ISO 9712. Its examination package includes General, Specific, Instruction Preparation and practical examination components. Do not borrow its eligibility or fee figures for an ASNT NDT Level II application.

When comparing providers, use the full program name rather than searching only for “ASNT Level II.” Check the method and any technique scope as well. Save the official program link beside the course description so that a similarly named product does not become the basis of your preparation plan.

Accreditation is another distinction

ASNT's Employer Based Certification accreditation program audits an organization's written practice or certification procedure and personnel certification packages. That organizational accreditation is different from an individual passing ASNT's central examinations.

If a provider or employer mentions accreditation, ask which organization and program the claim covers. Do not use an organization's accreditation listing as evidence that a particular person holds an ASNT central credential.

A checklist before you study

Write down the issuing body or employer, method, program name, applicable written practice and examinations still needed. Ask how a future employer would review your existing records rather than assuming acceptance. Preserve training and experience evidence independently of your study notes.

Use the method requirements guide to organize application evidence. If your target is the ASNT UT General exam, try the UT diagnostic within its stated outline scope. Preparation helps identify gaps; the issuing organization and employer determine which certification requirements you have met.
