The UT General outline change for exams after 5 February 2027
✓ Checked 17 Oct 2026 against ASNT's NDT Level II examinations page.
ASNT publishes separate UT General topic lists for exams prior to and after 5 February 2027. Choose preparation material by the date you will actually test. If you reschedule across that boundary, review the outline again before continuing with the same study plan. The ASNT examinations page is the source for the change.
The UT General exam guide introduces the earlier topics. Use this page alongside it when planning a later appointment. The Angle Beam overview explains our current UT focus.
What ASNT has published
✓ Both UT General listings show 50 items and 2 hours. The earlier list groups study around techniques, base materials, weldments, bonded structures, discontinuity detection and evaluation. The revised list reorganizes the material around principles and techniques, examining materials and product forms, collecting and interpreting data and reporting, and training, certification and safety.
The revised detail explicitly includes equipment preparation, scan planning, component conditions, thickness measurements, data quality, indication evaluation and technician training. These are summaries of the published topics, not a prediction of individual exam content. ASNT does not give percentage weights beside these UT topic lists.
Check the boundary before booking
The headings say “prior to” and “after” the change date. They do not explicitly assign an exam taken on the date itself to either version.
Unresolved in ASNT's published headings: which outline applies to an appointment on 5 February 2027 itself. If your exam falls on that date, confirm with ASNT when you book.
For an appointment near the transition, keep the outline with your appointment information and have the applicable version confirmed before making a final study schedule. Repeat that check if the appointment moves. Avoid treating the date on a course advertisement as evidence of which exam version you will receive.
Update your study notes
The following is an editorial study method, rather than an official crosswalk between outlines. Start with the revised topic list open beside your existing notes. Give each topic a place in your study folder and mark whether you can explain it, need more reading, or need supervised practical instruction.
For equipment preparation, make a checklist in your own words that explains the purpose of each setup decision. For examination planning, sketch a component and explain how access and geometry affect the approach. For reporting, practice describing what evidence supports an interpretation and what information would still be needed. Keep the applicable procedure beside these exercises.
Do not delete a topic simply because its old heading has disappeared. Compare the detailed objectives before deciding that your notes no longer apply. Where the relationship is unclear, mark it for review with your responsible technical supervisor. A reorganized outline does not supply an official equivalence map for your existing course chapters.
Keep preparation and certification separate
Before choosing study materials, read the certification-route comparison. ASNT NDT Level II and ASNT 9712 are distinct programs, as ASNT's certification comparison explains. Check the full program name on your application and the exam name on your appointment.
Use the UT diagnostic to organize revision within the site's stated scope. Read the outline version shown with the preparation material before interpreting a result. Treat any gap between that scope and your appointment's outline as a separate study task. A practice result cannot confirm readiness for every revised objective or replace your employer's assessment of practical competence.
